I had dinner at Fox Brothers BBQ last night with some friends.  It was good.  Really good.

I got the pulled pork and sliced brisket plate.  Both were tasty.  Both were not too heavily flavored, and when sauced, were excellent.  The sauce, BTW, is a perfect balance of sweet, sour and spicy.

For an appetizer, we got "the Tomminator":  A pile of tater tots covered in Brunswick Stew and melted cheese.  It was delicious.

But the whole reason for this post, is the sides.  I got collard greens and mac and cheese.  Honestly, both of them were probably the best I have ever had at any BBQ joint ever.  Seriously.  My only experience with the Brunswick stew was between tots and cheese, but it was also excellent.  Tom got the cole slaw and said it was also excellent.

I'm considering going back and ordering the "4 sides" vegetarian plate.  They're that good.

Nope. Where's that?

I have had a LOT of mac and cheese though. It's my litmus test for a restaurant. I order it first and use that as a judge of quality. Fox Bros is in my top 3 ever.

Oh man, Sam & Dave's is our gold standard of bbq. I love them and I generally am not even much of a bbq fan (mainly because I don't care for bbq sauce). But their mac and cheese is exquisite.

You can also find their mac and cheese recipe in an article online somewhere.... Too lazy to find it right now.

I didn't have heavy cream and used skim milk, eeeek. I thought with all that cheese it would still be fattening enough, and the recipe was delightfully easy, but I think it needs that heavy cream action to be gooey enough.

It was still pretty dang good. And did I say easy?

heathen! the heavy cream is the entire dish !!!

Did you see that "1,400 calories, 90 grams fat (56 grams saturated)" part? You will not make me feel guilty about trying to make it a little less death-inducing. Plus, like I said, it's still yummy. Sharp cheddar and parmesan, duh.

Of course I did! And I taste every single calorie and gram of fat! And it is delicious.

Have you tried Alton Brown's stovetop Mac and Cheese? It's in my top 3 of all time. It's got a ton of butter, eggs and cheese in it, but I'm betting it is still under 1400 calories a serving.

He also makes deep fried mac and cheese in that episode, but I haven't gone there yet.

Holy crap, that's exactly what my boyfriend would say!!

But for the record...I like FB's meat better that S&D's meat, but I like S&D's sides more than I like FB's sides.

Gotta weigh back in here after having Fox Bros this evening. Their pork is really good, and I doubt I could tell very much difference between it and Sam and Dave's in a blind test. I have to give the mac and cheese and Brunswick stew preferences to Sam and Dave's all the way, though.

I have seen that place several times, but never been. How are their prices and the like? Do they have fried green tomatoes?

Sandwiches are under $10, plates are $10-$15. The website has the menu in PDF with prices.

No fried green tomatoes.

I've been a big fan of Fox Bros. since they started serving their grub at Smith's Old Bar a couple years ago. Their sides are EXCELLENT, and their BBQ is my favorite in Atlanta.

Twitch and I both agreed that everything is better at the new location. It's all cooked on site, instead of being brought in.

I would not characterize most of the sides as vegetarian (maybe the mac and cheese and the cole slaw, but that's about it. The veggies are cooked with pork, in the grand southern tradition.
