When your Tivo gets confused...

Mr. Iwanyk, 32 years old, first suspected that his TiVo thought he was gay, since it inexplicably kept recording programs with gay themes. A film studio executive in Los Angeles and the self-described "straightest guy on earth," he tried to tame TiVo's gay fixation by recording war movies and other "guy stuff."

"The problem was, I overcompensated," he says. "It started giving me documentaries on Joseph Goebbels and Adolf Eichmann. It stopped thinking I was gay and decided I was a crazy guy reminiscing about the Third Reich."

so does Tivo tape other things that it thinks you would like?

I bet mine would think I was a 3-year-old and tape me Scooby Doo episodes. Does yours do this? What does it pick for you?

It can, but you can also turn that feature off.

I've looked at the stuff that TiVo is recommending to me, and most of it is stuff that I've already seen and don't really need to record again (Buffy repeats on Fox5 or FX), or random movies (I TiVo'd a lot of movies on Starz when I first got the thing). I haven't really kept up with my ratings, however, and the machine is stuck thinking I just mostly like cartoons and sci-fi shows.

When we first got it, Tivo thought we really liked saved by the bell. it recorded a lot.

Now it's just confused by the combo of my tastes, liz tastes, and alicas. The only thing we all agree on is buffy.

So you must be the TiVo owner that [livejournal.com profile] xopherg was telling me about. Was setting up the ripping and downloading of mpegs from the TiVo tedious? I'm interested in both doing that and the software that lets you watch shows at an accelerated rate.

The main problem is that I don't have a decent computer to download anything to at the moment (the largest drive on any computer I have at home right now is 4 gig).

The only thing we all agree on is buffy.

Isn't that how the world should be? :)

If you are a computer geek, networking and hacking Tivo is easy. Open it up, put in the network card, put your drive in your PC, run a program, reassemble Tivo and it's a Linux box you can telnet into and hack with.

The accelerated viewing is a function of the new version of WinDVD.

Ah, so it thought, at first, that you were [livejournal.com profile] lineleader.

I saw a comment today about that article to the effect of, "Why do people worry so much about marketers spying on them, if the methods are THIS bumblingly inept anyway?" :)
