After my day's adventures, Brian said he was heading to see Final Fantasy and I tagged along. Well, it was a hell of a time.

First off, the visuals are amazing. Astounding even. This is a computer animated movie where you can frequently forget it is not real life. One of the reasons for this is that they used motion capture to animate the models. They recorded the movements of people and then "traced" them in 3D.

I find this interesting, because Ralph Bakshi used the same technique in the 70's and I consider it cheating. True capital "A" Art in animation conveys the essence of humanity, not just the appearance. The thing is, Bakshi was a poor artist. As an animator his characters looked sloppy. In Final Fantasy, there is an attention to detail not frequently seen outside of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. These people wanted to make the most realistic CGI film ever... and they succeeded.

Which makes it such a shame that the story is SUCH A PILE OF SHIT! When it isn't being a touchy-feelie hippy ecofetish fairy tale, it's ripping off Aliens. You think that over four years and $140 million dollars someone would have the guts to say, "Hey guys! Has anyone else realized that this story sucks?" Someone had to have realized that to make a truly amazing animated movie the characters don't just need to look human. They need to speak, act and feel human too.

Still, all of that being said, this is an amazing flick. Go see it. As eye candy this is a jumbo assortment of Godiva. The story while flawed, is merely silly. If you want to see a really bad movie, Tomb raider is still playing.
