For years, I have worn cheap shoes. Usually Target black skate shoes that look like this:

They cost $20, they last for about 3 months, they look decent with jeans or black pants (all I ever wear) and they are easily slipped on and off while tied. I have a few pair of boots I'll wear out to gothy nights, or to a burn, but 95% of the time I wear these.

Now I am debating buying some more advanced shoes. Does anyone have any suggestions for something that fits many or all of these criteria:

1. Preferably black, or grey. Brown is meh and bright colors distract me and annoy me.
2. Comfortable. I'm a big guy, and I put a lot of weight on my feet.
3. Durable. I'd like something that lasts longer than 3 months.

Zappos has over 1000 brands of shoes. Can someone tell me a good one?

The best thing for you is two-fold. One, trial and error. No further explanation needed. But more specifically, the second - go see someone who specializes in this kind of thing. Running or specialty shoe stores are equipped to look at the way you walk/stand/run and give you information about brands and styles that are best for your lifestyle. Foot Solutions is a pretty good one, in my opinion, though the inventory is a little limited for some.

Also remember you'll have to break them in, so withhold some judgment.

MERRELL!!!! Don't know if it's really your thing or not, but they are incredibly comfortable, durable, and designed to be comfortable even when on your feet for hours. They're very popular with drs, nurses, and chefs. I have sneakers which I love to death, and then a casual version of the 'slide'? These shoes are so good I don't mind that they are made of leather, if that's telling you anything.

I also say Merrell. Expensive, but easily the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. Check DSW as they're usually cheaper there than Zappos.

Yeah, I like Merrell as well. A pair of Merrell hikers has been my official pregnancy shoes (which is a tricky time, feet swell, plus I carry a bowling ball everywhere I go). He's right about DSW - I go there and get last season's Merrell shoes for way cheaper than other places. They last me about a year, and I go for 2-3 mile walks on a regular basis, plus the usual roaming around town wear and tear.

I've also heard good things about Merrell shoes. But I just bought a new pair of Doc Martens and am in love with them all over again. They're durable, fit great, and support my feet well. Dave is a big fan of the dressier Sketchers.
