May. 30th, 2003 11:20 amSo, last year I screwed up and forgot to close my Wachovia account when I opened my credit union account. When I stopped getting direct deposit sent there they started hitting me with a 'no direct deposit' fee. After nine months, this ate my balance down to the point where a $5 checkcard purchasehad me into the negative numbers. Once it fell below zero I got hit with a ton more fees. Then they closed my account. Fee for that too. Now the collection people are calling me. I'll admit I'm slack for not taking care of this months ago, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay $105.91 for what amounts to me owing Wachovia $3.
So today I called the collection agency. I was expecting a bit of leeway, but the guy who talks to me was funny. He was still in the 'hardass bill collector' mode, and not the 'the economy is shit and we will take what we can get' mode. Alas, in his efforts to be a hardass he abandoned logic.
Him: Why can't you pay this bill?
Me: Because I disagree with the fees.
Him: There's no disagreement here...
Me: (cutting him off) Yes, there is. See, I disagree with you. That makes this a disagreement.
