Spend part of today discussing sleep habits with [livejournal.com profile] litovka. She has no trouble getting to sleep, but wakes up in the wee hours of the morning. I personally tend to have trouble falling asleep, but sleep through the night. Waking up is always a bitch for me. I have had days when I woke up and panicked because the alarm was not going off. If it wasn't going off, I obviously must have slept through something important.

I've learned a few things over the years about sleep. When I first feel tired, I need to go to bed. If I stay up another half hour, I'll be up all night. Melatonin helps me fall asleep, valerian helps me sleep deeply.

Certain things can keep me from a decent nights sleep, like sunlight. If I go to bed at 7am, and the room is not blacked out, I'll be up at 10am.

Certain foods can keep me from getting a full nights sleep. Decaf coffee still has a ton of acid and can make me wake up around 4am with bad heartburn.

Then there was that Highlander bratwurst melt. I don't know what they put in them, but later that night I was farting so loudly I woke myself up.

How do you sleep?

These days, I'm sleeping too much. It's bothering me, but I don't know how to stop. :(

When I find myself sleeping too much, I try to wait it out. If I need to force myself back to normal, I go for a minimum hourlong walk in the evening. It helps.

If left to my own devices, I go to bed between 11pm and 1am, waking up between 8am and 11am. Unfortunately, even if I goto bed at 5 I am up by 11. Also unfortunate is that I need the alarm to go off at 7am to get me to work at 8:30.

I could work 10a-7p, waking up at 8/8:30, but I don't like to get out so late!

Alternating series of 42 awake / 6 asleep and 60 awake / 12 asleep, generally. No problems sleeping through the night.

mmmmmm, sleeeeeeep.

I sleep 8 to 9 hours and get sick if I have less. it sucks. I generally start to fade around 11-12 and wake up naturally 8-ish, making my 7AM wake-up a bitch on weekdays.

Ha... infrequently is the short answer.

Really.. when I'm on challenging rotations I usually go to bed by 10pm and get up at like 4am to finish my work. I have been known to stay up till 1 or 2 and get up at 3 or 4.

I can't sleep in past 9am. I will wake up at least once on any given morning by 6am.

I nap well and often. I can sleep in any position anywhere at any time. My roommate finds infinite amusement in my couch sleeping habits.

I occaisionally sleep walk.. usually just when I'm exhausted and need to go to the bathroom (or so its been reported). People that have seen it say that once I pee I go straight back to bed.

And boy do I talk in my sleep... lots.. novels of nonsense. I even sung once.

and I kick, and steal covers and try to sleep spread eagle, completely encompassing all of my queen size bed...

Considering the cats, dogs and occasional husband you have to share the bed with, I can imagine you sleep rather territorially.

I used to fall asleep right away with no problems. Now I go through phases - sometimes not able to fall asleep at all, other times able to get to sleep right away. I had night terrors as a teenager and still have them sometimes if I am asleep alone in a completely dark room. I also talk and talk and talk. And talk. And talk.

Up until about 4 years ago all I had to do was lie down and I'd be asleep inside of 10 minutes. No more. I haven't been able to sleep with someone else unless I'm drunk since I got divorced in 2000. The dog is an exception ;-). It's been steadily downhill from that point. It doesn't really bother me anymore. I can feel my body going to sleep (sinking, temperature change, drooling and whatever else) but my mind stays behind and keeps me awake. Sleep is now more like a few hours of relaxation. On the plus side of gone from needing at least 8 hours of good sleep, to doing fine on 5-6 of lying around waiting for morning.

Randomly. I have tried for years to adjust to a normal 'schedule', but I have yet to find any long-term success. I used to be very sleep-oriented. I required about 12 hours a day, and could fall asleep within 2 seconds of my head hitting the pillow. No real exaggeration there. However now my body seems to prefer 9 hours of sleep on average, and sleep doesn't necessarily come so easily to me. I know the meaning of insomnia now. For years it was a mystery.

I don't do naps very well.

That reminds me when I had Varsity chili dog after spending all night working. Got home, and wound up waking up every half hour or so because of gas. Noxious stuff.

Had to be either the chili or mustard on it; never had a problem before, but I haven't had the chili there before.

My sleep schedule is all fubared right now. Up all night, getting to bed between 12 and 5am, to sleep past the alarm at 10, finally get up around 2pm. From there it's shower, dress, find breakfast / lunch, then go to class. Repeat.

Ugh.

[identity profile] uglor.livejournal.com 2004-06-22 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I was on that schedule for five years of college. Once you graduate (again), get a job (again) and have to start getting up at 7am for work (again) you want to cry.

I've got myself trained annoyingly well. If I lay down in bed, I'm usually asleep within 10 minutes. If I'm not in bed, it's almost impossible to sleep no matter how tired. I usually wake up between 7:30 and 8:30 whether the alarm goes off or not and regardless of how late I went to bed.

But I've got exceptions, too, usually in the form of two to three week bouts of insomnia when I sleep lest than 3 hours a night.
