Tuesday afternoon my friend said "Want to blow off work tomorrow and ride to Heard County to rescue dogs with me?" Since the boss is on vacation this week I said "sure!"

I met up with Missy and Hannah from the Barking Hound Village Foundation Rescue and we headed south. The trip was uneventful, despite the GPS taking us down a few dirt roads that scared the hell out of my traveling companions. On a side note, the sight of baby goats frolicking is enough to put off any fear of being raped to death by inbred hillbillies.

We got to the shelter and started looking around. There was a prisoner working off community service there, wearing an actual black and white striped suit. He said he had been given six months community service for public drunkenness and loved working there. He used to live in Little 5 and when he heard I lived there he started asking about his old neighborhood. "Is the Point still there?" No. "Is Fellinis still there?" Yes, but not called Fellinis anymore.

We got a collection of various dogs. They included: a Weimaraner who loved belly flopping in the grass, a terrified mutt who had to be carried everywhere, a beagle-golden mix named Lacy who wanted to snuggle with Hanna or I the whole way home and kept stealing licks on my ear. There was Bluffkin, the fat lab puppy who was furious he was not allowed to drive who chewed on my fingers when given a chance. In the back was Limbo and brother Tango, who seemed quite happy.

The ride home was less uneventful. The poor Weimaraner got sick and threw up. Then he got sick and threw up again. Then he got sick and threw up again. By the time we got back to the shelter he and his crate were both due to be hosed down. Everyone else is being checked out by vets and will hopefully be on to a better life soon.

The other thing I saw was at a gas station in Newnan. On a stand next to the bathroom was a selection of "ADULT DVDS." They had no pictures on the front, just a brightly colored paper with block letters. There were four kinds: BLACK, WHITE, LATINO and ASIAN.
