The Most Interesting Blog Post in the World

So last night I went to Dos Equis Most Interesting Academy to shoot the Dr Sketchy show for [livejournal.com profile] lorigami. They had a birds of prey display with real live owls and falcons, a shark expert panel, some DJs, henna done by [livejournal.com profile] elizebethjoy and some barbers...

I learned several things:

Dos Equis is crap beer, even when it's free.

The secret to being an MC:

Step 1: Address the audience as a unit based on civic identity: "YO ATL! HOW Y'ALL DOIN'?"
Step 2: Remind them of the event they are at: "YOU AT! THE DOS EQUIS! MOST INTERESTING ACADEMY!"
Step 3: Encourage them to make some noise: "MAKE SOME NOISE!"

Repeat these three steps all night.

Trying to convince people that your event will be interesting pretty much guarantees it will be boring.

At one point one of the artists came up to me and said "I see you in my bar all the time!"

I asked hom what his bar was. He said the Clermont. I do go there on occasion, but haven't been in a while. I think for a moment...

"When I'm there, am I usually wearing a kilt?"

"YES!"

"That's my friend Joe!" :)

I realized I never posted this.

I'm not going to DragonCon this year. I'm not standing in line for hours to get a badge. I'm not climbing 22 flights of stairs to find out the party got shut down, ran out of booze, or is only letting in certain people. I'm not standing outside an elevator for an hour. I'm not trapped in an elevator with 50 people reeking of con-funk. I'm not drinking flat Squirt and Mr Bostons vodka as punch. I'm not stuck in the back of the room for a guest. I'm not dealing with playing phone tag with friends. I'm not spending hundreds on a hotel room. I'm not sleeping through any panels or presentations I don't want to miss. I'm not dealing with the crowds of people out on the smoking patio. I'm not falling down the stairs on the way to the Marriot. I'm not going to almost get run over crossing the street. I'm not listening to some idiot explain how he spent $500 on some bullshit "collectible" I'm not dealing with the drunks, the assholes, the fanboys, the pervs and the 49,900 people there who I don't know and don't give a fuck about.

I won't see my friends who are there, but I can see them later.

I will be grilling with friends. I will mow my lawn. I will watch movies I want to see. I will have fun. I will drink good booze and eat good food. I will hang out with cool people. I will take awesome photographs because it is a full moon this weekend.

Yes, fun can be had at DragonCon, but it's too much goddamn work to find it. I'm not going to try to.
