Nature vs Nurture
Feb. 5th, 2007 10:04 amHere's an interesting one. 30 years ago a pair of babies in Malaysia were switched. An ethnic Chinese baby was raised by Muslims and the Muslim kid was raised by Buddhists. In 1998 the first kid met his sister and discovered who his real parents were. 3 months later he moved in with them. The second kid is happily married to a Chinese woman and has no interest in finding his real parents.

Now the kid raised Muslim is trying to renounce Islam and convert to Buddhism, which is a jailable offense in parts of Malaysia. I find it interesting that the kid raised Muslim is willing to risk jail to change, but the kid raised Buddhist is perfectly happy. I wonder how this would work in America with kids raised by Fundamentalist Christian and Unitarian parents.
