A little family history:
My paternal grandfather was born in America. While his mother was pregnant, she travelled to America just to make sure he was an American citizen. When he was a child, he returned to Italy for several years, then moved here, married my grandmother, had my uncle and my dad, and in 1981, he died.
Since my paternal great-grandfather was an Italian citizen, I'm eligible for dual US-Italian citizenship. So, it looks like I can either travel back to Italy and spend some time collecting birth, marriage and death certificates, or pay a service a grand or so to do it for me. Once I do all that, it seems I am eligible for an Italian citizenship and passport.
