Oct. 12th, 2005 03:03 pmThe trip to PDF got off to a bad start. We got to the airport with plenty of time, only to discover that our flight had been delayed. We now had 3 hours to kill instead of one. We finally got in the air, and made to to DC.
The next day we woke up to find it raining. We packed up the car and van in the rain then set off for Delaware. Of course, Cynthia had accidentally grabbed her roommates bookbag by mistake, so we got to go back and drop it off. Then we got to sit in Friday afternoon DC commuter traffic for what felt like 97 hours (it was more like two). Our total trip time to a place about 100 miles away was about 6.5 hours. as we drive through Odessa, Delaware to the site, we notice the power is out all over town. We finally get there, and set up the tents in a slight drizzle.
Cynthia declared that after our hellish drive out there, she will not be driving again all weekend, and starts getting drunk enough to make this a reality. We start setting up tents and a group heads off to buy dinner and booze for the night. They return several hours later, having determined that the power is out for miles, and the closes place to buy food is the gas station way back buy the highway. They return with a variety of mixers, gas station junkfood and several Hulk Hogan pizzas.
Filled with gas station junkfood and booze and armed with a Happy Frog umbrella, we head off to explore the place. Cyn's friend Dustin has set up the central party camp. It's a well constructed tent with sound system, DJ setup, lights and video projector. I recognize several people from my last trip to DC, including Elizabeth, who says she recognized me by my 'surly glare'. Across from that is Thunderdome, where two people can fight using stuffed animals as weapons. Next to that is a tent showing movies and videos 24 hours a day. Nearby is a stage, with various DJs and stuff happening all day and night.
The party goes all night, with no one seeming to mind the rain coming down. It was here we heard a mix of "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails and "Come Together" by The Beatles. It's called the "Come Closer" mix by DJ Zebra, and I found it! I finally stumble drunkenly back to my tent around 3am.
There is a RV pulling up, and one of the guys in it comes by to say Hi. His name is Slag. During the weekend I will repeatedly misremember his name as Skag, Skank, Sludge, Stan, Shag, etc. He's cool. He left New Orleans for for Burning Man. When Katrina hit, he just decided to keep travelling. He'd been to New York and was now at PDF.
Next: Saturday!
