Feb. 28th, 2005 11:00 pmI found and downloaded the movie 9 Songs today. For those who are not familiar, it's the new movie by Michael Winterbottom, who directed 24 Hour Party People. It's also one of those very sexually explicit movies about people who fuck a lot. The basic plot is about a man and a woman who have intense sex and go to rock concerts.
I haven't watched it yet, but I fear it will fall into the same mold as Last Tango In Paris, In the Realm of the Senses, 9 1/2 Weeks, etc. All of these movies and more in the same vein have the same drawback. They all treat sex as the Important. Dramatic. Experience. People have sex, then they have deep, meaningful conversation, then probably a fight, then some more sex, then they reveal a traumatic emotional scar from childhood, then they have more sex. Lather, rinse, repeat. After working at Consumption Junction I'm fearing I will never see a new way of depicting sex on screen, either in porn or mainstream.
Don't get me wrong. I like sex. I like movies about sex. Admittedly, I'm a bit behind on having the sex lately, but that just means when I do start having it again, I'll just have to have twice as much to catch up. My problem with these movies is that there is a lot more than Serious Dramatic Sex. As another movie I still need to see put it, Sex is Comedy. Where is the funny, happy explicit sex movie? When will someone like Kevin Smith write a movie with as much dick as dick jokes?
About 10 years ago I was dating a girl who played Sylvester at Six Flags. Yes, I fucked Sylvester. I'm not a furry, so we never did it with her in the suit, but there was one time when I became acutely aware of the giant disembodied Looney Tune head staring at me from the corner while we did it. That's funny. At the time it was a tad creepy, but now it's just funny. When will there be a movie with the brains and balls to be smart, sexy and funny?
