[livejournal.com profile] covvie posted his school history and it made me think of mine. So here's the education of Mike:

Kindergarten: - Spring road school in Neenah, Wisconsin. Unremarkable.

1st - 2nd grade - Fox Valley Christian Academy in Neenah, Wisconsin. The beginning of my time in Christian school hell. Blech. My father was a serious Christian and once said that the public schools were "firmly in the grip of Satan" and that I would never go to public school, even if he had to work a second job.

Move to Atlanta in summer 1981.

3rd Grade - Some Christian school in Roswell. I remember a girl being expelled for writing a note that called someone a 'penis head'. Saw my first Christian rock band. First time wearing school uniforms. Thankfully my last. Dad dies in May of 1982.

4th Grade - Shiloh Hills Christian school in Kennesaw/Canton area. Very rednecky. Require parents to sign a pledge saying that they will not let their kids listen to rock music. Mom, with a cabinet full of old Beatles albums, signs and ignores it.

Mom realizes Christain school sucks. I could have told her that.

5th grade - Rocky Mountain elementary in Marietta, GA. Back in public schools. For the first time, I'm in gifted classes, called Target, and I love it. I met Brian VanHiel, now my oldest friend. Back then we hated each other.

6th - 8th grade - Mabry Middle school in Marietta, GA. More gifted classes keep me sane. Brian and I spend three years trying to piss each other off.

For unknown reasons Brian and I become friends over the summer break between 8th and 9th grades. Other classmates are unnerved by Brian and I being friends. Imagine Israel and Palestine suddenly becoming allies. Everyone is worried because they know both are crazy, but at least in the past they were just fighting with each other. With Brian as my partner in crime we wreak havoc on Cobb County for years.

9th - 12th grade - The formative years. Also the complete dork years. I am a Math Team nerd. I meet Tom Dechman, the most memorable teacher I have ever had. I make friends I still have to this day. My parents start going to their cabin in the mountains every weekend. My house turns into a temple of underage drinking and debautchery. I get expelled for a year at the end of 11th grade. I return in 9 months, finishing high school in Jan 1992.

College, round 1 - Georgia Tech. I live in Techwood, the dorm for fuckups. I discover pot. I drop out.

College, round 2 - Georgia Tech again. I return, having learned that pot + college != passing grades. I switch to majoring in STaC. I graduate in Dec 1997.

College, round 3 - Georgia State - Mostly Photography classes, taken for fun.
