Truth is stranger than fiction
Mar. 21st, 2003 03:19 pmWoodruff Park was just too wierd today. First off, there was the traveling human colon exhibit. That's right, a tent with a giant fake colon in it.
Standing right in front of this colon was a group of Christians with 'Atlanta Rescue 03' shirts on. They were holding hands, taking turns talking into a megaphone about their Jesus experiences. This was merely annoying.
The truly sad part was when these Jesus-krispies, uniformly white, walked amongst the black people that hang out in Wodruff Park. They were handing out t-shirts, candy and tracts and trying to tell them about God. This unintentional reenactment of white christian imperialism was met with smirks by the people in the park.
My favorite was the glassy-eyed teenagers who were trying to explain to some black guy how with jesus in his life he could get a job, a home and a future. Looking truly annoyed, the black guy explained that he was only on his lunchbreak from work, passing through the park, and didn't have time to explain how ignorant they truly were.
